»The majority of frauds occur in the car insurance sector,« says Tina Dular from the Slovenian Insurance Association. »Comprehensive vehicle liability insurance frauds are also on the rise, followed by different forms of civil liability.« Individuals who seek easy money opportunities are usually the ones behind such insurance frauds. Organised groups also orchestrate such frauds and file high insurance claims.
Marking Anti-Corruption Day, the Triglav Insurance Company revealed a case of a high school student who was offered an opportunity to earn 200 euros by an unknown man. The student was only asked to be a car passenger in a previously set up traffic accident. He would then tell an already made up story to the police - a story which should be supported with a false expression of pain. The student would receive his last financial installment if he managed to convince the medical staff at the Emergency Department that he really was in pain, and if he was sent to a physiotherapist.
These kinds of fraudulent cases are the reason why the Slovenian Insurance Association has prepared a computer-based programme which enables the fast discovery of connections between certain parties involved in traffic accidents. If the fraud suspicion is confirmed, the insurance company launches a process against the criminals. The Triglav Insurance Company alone noted an almost 30 % increase in frauds, compared with last year. The value of the confirmed frauds are estimated at 2 million euros worth of insurance claims.
