Tarfila’s winning photograph is entitled “Church on the fields of Sorško Polje”. It’s a picture of the sun rising above the town of Škofja Loka and the surrounding mountain range.

This year’s edition of the Sony World Photography Awards, one of the world’s major photography competitions, saw a record number of entries. A total of 230,000 photographs from 186 countries were entered into the contest. The Open category featured 95,000 entries.

Tarfila will now vie for the Open Photographer of the Year award. The winner will be announced in London in mid-April, and the photographs will be on exhibition between April 22 and May 8. Andrej Tarfila’s winning photo will also be published in the Sony World Photography Awards 2016 book.

More than one million photographs had been entered into the contest since its inception in 2007.

Andrej Tarfila was the winner of the 2016 Sony World Photography Awards, Slovenia National Award, which took place in Ljubljana. Anja Matko placed second and Edvard - Badri Storman came in third. A total of 876 photographs taken in 2015 were entered into the national contest.
