It was a great disappointment, but this unfortunate fourth place (and it is the first time Tina Maze ever finished fourth in the biggest competitions) should be forgotten as soon as possible. On Wednesday another opportunity is waiting: the downhill race. Foto: STA

Tina Maze med slalomom za superkombinacijo v Sočiju
If Tina managed bronze in slalom, everybody would praise her for her sensible and experienced approach towards the race, and now most people believe she was too cautious... The difference between a hero and a loser this time amounted to only ten milliseconds... Foto: EPA

Tina Maze looked for the reasons for losing a medal only within herself: "My skiing was not good enough for what I wanted to achieve. I don't blame anybody but myself."

Only ten milliseconds separated the Slovenian skier from the bronze medal in Sochi. Did Maze expect Julia Mancuso (the fastest in downhill race) to keep 86 milliseconds of advantage, knowing that the American was not considered a topmost slalom skier? "I knew she would rush headlong downhill, but I was still hoping..."
"Let's now forget about slalom"
In slalom, at the moment Tina Maze's weakest discipline, nothing goes according to wishes. "I haven't found the right rhythm. At times the result is good, and sometimes it happens as it happened today. It’s difficult. Let's now forget about slalom. I feel better in other disciplines. It is a pleasure to ski here, the tracks are excellent, the light perfect, the snow good."
During warming up she was phenomenal
Andrea Massi, aMaze team leader, prefers to focus on the next race. "That's reality. But we must concentrate on good things, and that is the downhill race in which she was excellent. Also during slalom warming up she skied very well, the Italians even said she was phenomenal. I don't know what's going on during races – it seems she doubts her ability. She should get going after a couple of gates, but that is missing."
Tina's trainer Mauro Pinni is aware of how close his ward came to the medal. "After the downhill race we were in an optimal position. We lost the medal because of a couple of turns at the top of the slalom."
Košir: It really is cruel to be left empty-handed like that
How did the winners of the bronze medals in Lillehammer 1994 see the unfortunate unravelling of the super combined? Alenka Dovžan in TV Slovenia studio said that Maze started the slalom very cautiously. She noticed the lack of fast changes Tina is capable of, while a larger mistake threw her off the rhythm.
Jure Košir (20 years ago he won a medal in the Olympic slalom by nine milliseconds) wrote on Twitter: "It really is cruel to be too slow by 10 milliseconds, after two minutes and 33 seconds. But Tina Maze still has strings to her bow left."
Ferk partly satisfied
Maruša Ferk finished 10th, which is her best placement at the Olympic games. Satisfied? "Well, partly yes, partly no. Slalom was, obviously, decisive. It was my intention to attack without reserve, I had nothing to lose. The track was very difficult, both terrain and the placement of gates. From the very start the terrain is very steep. You need to catch a good rhythm, make fast changes… I hoped to lead after crossing the finish line (but she came third). But now the ice is broken and everything will be easier."
Ilka Štuhec, after finishing the downhill race with good, eleventh time, did not finish the slalom race of the super combined: "I tried to show a good slalom performance, but this time it didn't work out. But we must keep positive. I am happy I finally managed a good downhill race, and I hope to upgrade it on Wednesday."
