"We are the only country in Europe, where the police is on strike. It’s a disgrace," is how Cerar commented the police strike which began on Wednesday. The PM is not only disappointed, but also outraged by the action. He stressed that the police strike was launched even though the negotiations were not yet finished. He added that the police force was the only institution in the country for which the government has earmarked a substantial increase of additional funds for the next two years. "It’s a case of blackmailing our country, and I will not agree to it no matter what the consequences," was the sharp reaction of PM Cerar at a press-conference after a government session.

The police striking committee, made up of members from the striking committees from both police trade unions, replied that as members of the European Confederation of Police they have information that they are not the only ones in Europe on strike, and furthermore not even the only ones on strike this year. According to the police unions a strike was already carried out in the Netherlands and one was announced to happen in France.

However, contrary to the representatives of Slovenia’s government, the unions say that the French government and its representatives have "approached the issue with direct constructive negotiations without hesitation", leading to an agreement and thus avoiding a police strike. In their open letter the unions also criticize Cerar for his indecent remarks on the "legitimate rights of the police, who were forced to go on strike due to the non-fulfillment of previous agreements and contracts, which the government has a duty to respect".

"Your claims are truly shocking, as you deem disgraceful the legal and lawful actions of creditors who fight to recover their claims. At the same time, intentionally or unintentionally, you glorify the debtor, whose debts are unquestionable, but refuses to pay the debts," the police unions wrote.
