A general strike of energy sector workers started with works councils. The strike is planned until April 21, after which date consumers will start feeling the consequences of the strike at electricity supply should the government not respond, claims the Union.

The strike will start with two-hour works councils, and it will be stepped up day by day. Eles assured that the electric power supply will not be disturbed by the strike, as the required electric energy for Slovenia can be easily supplied from abroad.

The two strike demands
Prior to the beginning of the strike the Trade Union of Energy Sector of Slovenia addressed two strike demands, i.e. demanding a decision on restructuring and organisation of the Slovenian energy sector industry, and on suspension of layoffs under the cover of rationalisation and optimisation of the industry, until the document is adopted.

Management: High salaries and holiday allowance
The managements of the energy companies consider the strike as unwarranted, or even illegal. Their arguments against the strike are high salaries in energy sector on average, and high holliday allowance. The requests posed by the Union in their opinion should be no concern of the Union. Sanctions are planned should the production stop, Radio Slovenija reports.
