The government will first try to find a solution to a court ruling which decided that the salaries of public servants need to be raised as stipulated in a 2008 pay agreement. This could cost the government in excess of €170 million.

The decision of the Higher Court has yet again driven a wedge between the government and public sector unions. Virant pointed out earlier this week that such a huge payout would only be feasible if public sector salaries were lowered across the board. The pay increase has been frozen due to the economic crisis.
