The Parisian was brought in on Monday. In accordance to international standards for transporting art, the package was given 24 hours to acclimatize. Once it was opened the artwork was examined in detail. The gallery reviewed the damage list, put together by the owner of the painting, to protect itself from potential charges for poorly handling the artwork once it is returned.
The story of the painting, which according to Ivana Kobilca was one of her best, is quite unusual. In 1895, in Budapest, Emperor Franz Joseph saw a self-portrait of Kobilca and wanted to buy it. She refused to sell it. Therefore Franz Joseph purchased the Parisian.
Parisian now hangs right next to Ivana Kobilca's Summer - the most popular paintings for those visiting the National Gallery.
