in Provence, Michel de Nostradamus is born. He is best known for his book Les Propheties, which first appeared in 1555. In the book there are four-line stanzas in which he prophesies events that should occur in the future.

In 1799 the first U.S. President George Washington dies.

In 1900 Max Planck publishes his study of the quantum theory.

In 1902 the first telegraph cable is laid under the Pacific Ocean.

In 1911 the Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen becomes the first man to reach the South Pole. In this expedition he travelled with sled dogs, which despite the very low temperatures were able to travel more than 25 miles per day.

In 1914 was born Slovenian humorist, actor and writer Fran Milčinski, better known under the artistic name of Ježek (the Hedgehog).

In 1945 the General Assembly of the United Nations concluded that New York becomes the headquarters of the organization.
