French historian Auguste Molinier is born.
In 1882 German physicist Johannes "Hans" Wilhelm Geiger is born. He dealt with the exploration of radioactive substances and in 1913 created the first device for the identification and enumeration of charged particles, a Geiger counter. Together with Nuttal he discovered the link between energy alpha rays and their reach.
In 1921 actress Deborah Kerr is born. She became famous for her roles in the films The King and I, The Night of iguanas and Quo Vadis.
In 1942, in the Vipava Valley the first littoral partisan battalion is established. It was named after the Slovenian poet Simon Gregorčič.
In 1954, the Americans present Nautilus, the first nuclear-powered submarine in the world.
In 1955 The American idol of the post-war generation James Dean dies in a car accident. With his roles in the films East of Eden, A Rebel Without a Cause and Giant, he became a symbol of the "lost generation". Dean was the first actor to be nominated posthumously by the Film Academy as Best Actor. He still remains the only actor to be nominated twice after death.
