The Slovenian Mountaineering Association (PZS) is emphasizing that hikers should not overestimate their knowledge and skills. Especially in the beginning of the mountaineering seasons the goals should be chosen with care, and the difficulty should be increased gradually. As much data as possible should be gathered before the trip, including the difference in altitude, the level of difficulty, the length of the track, and the availability of mountain huts or bivouacs.

Mountaineers should pay special attention to children when taking them into the mountains. Mountaineering with children and the elderly demands a lot of attention, and adaptability. When in group, those less prepared should walk on the head of the queue.

When venturing into the mountains adequate personal and technical equipment is a must. Hikers should wear suitable shoes, and at least some pieces of clothing should be of strong colours. Warm clothing, spare underwear, a mountaineering map, a flashlight, and a first aid kit are necessary as well. For trips to higher mountains alpine helmets should be used for protection, and at the altitude above 2000 metres crampons and an ice axe are required for crossing snow fields.

Suitable hydration is very important, alcohol beverages are not advisable. It is wise to pack some energy food as well, and to rest every hour, or hour and a half; for this purpose a safe place should be chosen, preferably with a nice view!

Registering in the books can help in case of need
If a mountaineer needs help for himself, or for somebody else, and a mountain hut is close, he should consult the keeper of the hut. If that would be impossible, you should call the emergency number 112, and you will be connected with the mountain rescue service.

Mobile signal coverage should not be relied upon, as it is not available in all spots. But all the same the battery in your mobile phone should be filled before heading for the mountains; protect your phone from cold and wind, as in the opposite case the batteries will be depleted much sooner.

You should inform your family of your destination, so that they will be able to inform the rescue service in case you don't return in due time. Signing your name in registry books in mountain huts and mountain summits will make the work of the mountain rescue service easier in case of need.

When returning to the valley don’t forget to bring back also the garbage you produced during your trip!
