It has been a state holiday in Slovenia since 2005, however it's not a work-free day. It's a day when Slovenia remembers General Maister, a man who secured the country's northern border.
In 1918 he drove away German troops and took control of Maribor and the Slovenian part of the Carinthia region. He thus established the border between the newly formes State of the Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and Austria, which still runs today between Slovenia and Austria. The main ceremony will be held in the birthplace of Rudolf Maister, Kamnik.
