Slovenian beekeepers produce less and less honey: in 2012 they produced 1.910 tonnes of honey, in 2011 1.670 tonnes, in 2012 the figure did rise to 2.470 tonnes, but in 2013 it fell to 1.031 tonnes, and last year's production was really bad – only 470 tonnes of honey. Foto: EPA

Somewhere between 2.500 and 3.000 tonnes of honey are needed to accommodate the Slovenian market every year. "The average production in Slovenia is around 2.000 tonnes. Sadly the occurrence of bad years, when yearly productions are halved, is ever more often (2013 and 2014). Due to last year's losses a shortage of domestic honey can already be felt in certain regions," is what the Slovenian Beekeepers' Association says.
Even though Slovenia produces too little honey to meet its domestic demand, it still exports around 5 % of it. According to figures from Slovenia's Statistics Office, the country exported 97 tonnes of honey last year, mostly to Italy, Germany, Croatia, the Netherlands and Kosovo. Some was also exported to Iceland and South Korea.
