His director opus includes more than 120 performances. He directed in all Slovenian and many foreign theatres, most often in Vienna, Hamburg, Krakov and Trieste. He wrote about 80 radio plays, 60 books, 20 theatre texts and television plays. He was a director of the Ljubljanska Drama as well as the director of the Ljubljana city theatre. His first book, titiled “Knjiga za Jasmin” or book for Jasmin was dedicated to his daughter. He was known as a writer of satirical aphorisms.

Petan received more than 50 awards, domestic and foreign alike. Among them are the Prešeren fund award from 1966, the golden order of merit from 2004, the award of the city Maribor and the Glazerjeva award for life’s work which he received in 2007.
