Slovenian Health Minister Milojka Kolar Celarc last week called upon officials of the UKC Ljubljana hospital and the head of the neurology ward to step down due to a scandal involving a doctor who worked there.

Doctor Ivan Radan has been charged with 24 criminal counts, including seven murders. He is also suspected of drug abuse, abuse of office, and forgery of documents. Moreover, he is alleged to have secretly taken photographs of terminally ill patients.

UKC Ljubljana medical director Sergej Hojker said in a public statement that he hopes the minister knows what she is doing. He maintains that this is an attempt to sully the reputation of doctors and the healthcare system.

Tomorrow, Health Minister Milojka Kolar Celarc will ask the council of the hospital to set up an investigation to determine whether the hospital’s top officials were responsible for what has been going on. The minister said she regrets what happened at the neurology ward. She believes that healthcare workers in Slovenia do a great job. She had called upon officials of the UKC Ljubljana hospital and the head of the neurology ward to resign in order to protect the reputation of the hospital.

The Slovenian Medical Chamber has also weighed in on the issue. The President of the Medical Chamber Andrej Možina said he expects Radan to be stripped of his license, but added that the procedure is rather complicated.
