In 1876 American writer Jack London is born. His real name is John Griffith. Many of his stories were based on his own experiences as a tramp, sailor and gold digger. His important works include Call of the Wild, The Sea Wolf, and White Fang.

In 1915 the Rocky Mountains National Park was founded.

In 1976 the writer of detective stories Agatha Christie dies. Her best known characters were the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, and the aged lady with a sharp mind Miss Marple. Agatha Christie wrote more than 65 novels and numerous short stories, many of her novels were made into films.

In 1998 nineteen European countries agreed on the prohibition of cloning human beings.

In 2010 earthquake occurs in Haiti killing 230. 000 people.

1974 - The Steve Miller Band takes 1. place on the American singles chart with 'The Joker'.

1980 - Bee gees go to place No. 1 on the American album chart with 'The Bee Gees Greatest Hits', which includes the songs Jive Talkin, Tragedy, Stayin' Alive, How Deep Is Your Love, Night Fever.

1985 - after 24 weeks as the No. 1 album in the nation, Prince slipped to the No. 2 spot with Purple Rain. Replacing Prince at the top spot was Bruce Springsteen with Born In the USA.

2003 - Maurice Gibb, the member of Bee Gees, dies.

Leta 1876 se je rodil ameriški pisatelj Jack London. Mnoge zgodbe so nastale iz lastnih izkušenj potepuha, mornarja in iskalca zlata. Njegova pomembnejša dela so Klic divjine, Morski volk, Beli očnjak.

Leta 1933 se je v Mariboru rodil novinar in športni delavec Evgen Bergant.

Leta 1972 je v Piranu umrl slovenski režiser češkega rodu František Čap. Njegovi najbolj znani filmi so Vesna, Ne čakaj na maj in Vrata ostanejo odprta.
