Our merry couple went for a stroll and some ice cream, but instead saw a crowd gathering at a PRE-ELECTION RALLY – PREDVOLILNI SHOD. The POLITICIANS - POLITIKI were campaigning for the MAYORAL ELECTIONS – ŽUPANSKE VOLITVE. Dave also learned that the PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS are called PARLAMENTARNE VOLITVE, and he learned that as a foreigner he has no VOTING RIGHT or VOLILNA PRAVICA. So, Dave and Fani decided to have ice cream instead and to leave politics to the professionals. Like Winston Churchill once said: POLITICS is no game, but serious business…
Aaaaah, a happy moment for our couple. Dave finally finished his LAST EXAM – ZADNJI IZPIT at the LAW FACULTY – PRAVNA FAKULTETA. At first, he was so NERVOUS - ŽIVČEN, that he couldn’t eat and thus made even Fani a bit WORRIED - ZASKRBLJENA. But it all went well, and after finishing his DIPLOMA Dave has the chance to become a LAWYER - ODVETNIK. CONGRATULATIONS - ČESTITKE Dave!!!
Dave and Fani are thinking about getting a LIFE INSURANCE policy or ŽIVLJENJSKO ZAVAROVANJE that would cover LIFE COSTS - ŽIVLJENJSKI STROŠKI in the event of an ILLNESS – BOLEZEN, a DISABILITY – INVALIDNOST, or IN THE EVENT OF DEATH – V PRIMERU SMRTI. But as it seems, it is not so easy. The INSURANCE COMPANIES - ZAVAROVALNICE want to know a lot about the HEALTH CONDITION - ZDRAVSTVENO STANJE of a person. Young parents! Max Conor is with a BABYSITTER – VARUŠKA for the first time. Dave and Fani went to DINNER – VEČERJA to take a little TIME FOR THEMSELVES – ČAS ZA NJIJU. But Dave can’t RELAX – SPROSTITI SE. He’s worried about the baby… is Max HUNGRY – LAČEN, TIRED – UTRUJEN, IN A FRESH DIPER – V SVEŽI PLENICI or PREVIT? Or maybe he's SICK – BOLAN? But everything turns out fine. Fortunately.
With the new baby Fani and Dave have decided it’s time for a BIGGER CAR - VEČJI AVTO, a MINIVAN or ENOPROSTOREC. It has a VEČJI PRTLJAŽNIK – BIGGER TRUNK, is SAFE - VAREN, has GOOD AIR CONDITIONING – DOBRO KLIMATSKO NAPRAVO, and ZATEMNJENA STEKLA – TINTED WINDOWS. Plus, the CAR SALESMAN – PRODAJALEC at the AVTOHIŠA – CAR DEALERSHIP even says the price is negotiable. But before you buy any car, you should go for a TEST DRIVE or TESTNA VOŽNJA…
Looks like Dave is not SUPERSTITIOUS – VRAŽEVEREN at all. But he learned some new words: ITCHY NOSE means SRBEČ NOS, KUKAVICA is a CUCKOO, PRIPOROČLJIVO – RECOMMENDED, PLJUNITI – TO SPIT, DIMNIKAR is a CHIMNEY SWEEPER, SRAKA – MAGPIE, ŽALOST means SORROW… Let fate bring you only good things.
Today’s chess lesson didn’t go according to Dave’s plan. In the end it was Fani that did the teaching. And this is what Dave learned: CHESS – ŠAH, PAWN – KMET, ROOK – TRDNJAVA, KNIGHT – KONJ, BISHOP – VITEZ, KING – KRALJ, QUEEN – KRALJICA and CHECKMATE is ŠAH MAT!
It seems that Dave really likes the new COFFEE MACHINE - KAVNI APARAT. And he learned some handy new words as well. NAVODILO means INSTRUCTIONS, GARANCIJA is a WARRANTY, SKRIVATI is TO HIDE, KAVNA ZRNA are COFFEE BEANS and KAVNA USEDLINA is COFFEE GROUNDS. VKLOPITI is TO PLUG IN, IZKLOPITI is TO PLUG OUT, PRIŽGATI is TO TURN ON, UGASNITI is TO TURN OUT, and STIKALO is A SWITCH. We know that the coffee is great but maybe Dave should take it easy from now on or he'll start SHAKING – TRESTI SE again. Or maybe he could just try DECAF COFFEE - BREZKOFEINSKA KAVA the next time. Bellissimo!
Slovene is not as easy as it seems and it can be COMPLICATED - KOMPLICIRANO, especially when you consider all the different dialects it has. Neighbour Jože was not speaking CHINESE - KITAJŠČINA, nor HUNGARIAN – MADŽARŠČINA, and it was definitely no PARROT – PAPIGA language. Short – mostly two-syllable words - are often used in many Slovene dialects, including in ŠTAJERŠČINA – STYRIAN. And some of the phrases neighbour Jože used were: KI SI TI? – WHERE ARE YOU?, KA TE VEM – I DON'T KNOW, KI TE TO JE? – WHERE'S THAT?, NI NEKE HICE – IT'S NOT THAT HOT, DAJ NEHI NO – PLEASE, STOP IT, MAMO MI TO – WE'VE GOT THIS, and KA TE ČEŠ – WELL, WHAT CAN YOU DO. TE PA TAK – OK THEN.
Max Connor is in Prekmurje for the first time. He met his GRANDMOTHER – BABICA and GRANDFATHER – DEDEK, and they were very happy to meet their GRANDSON – VNUK. Dave was a bit panicked at the beginning, but Fani CALMED HIM DOWN – GA JE POMIRILA. He shouldn’t be so SENSITIVE – OBČUTLJIV, even if grandma Marija wants to give Max BREAD – KRUH and an EGG – JAJCE, or BILICA as they say in Prekmurje. It’s not meant for Max to eat those things, it’s just a CUSTOM – OBIČAJ in Prekmurje.
It looks like Dave is handling his “dad job’s” pretty well, huh? He knows how to make the baby SMILE – NASMEJATI, and CHANGE THE DIAPER – ZAMENJATI PLENICO which has POOP – KAKEC, despite the STENCH – SMRAD. Fani can be calm, because her boys are BONDING – SPLETATA VEZI really fast and Dave is very BRAVE – POGUMEN, or as he says, a NATURAL TALENT – NARAVNI TALENT.
Slovenes and their traditions… As Dave learned today, there is a tradition at the birth of a NEWBORN or NOVOROJENČEK, namely to MAKE A TOAST or NAZDRAVITI, so that the BABY or DOJENČEK is healthy… Dave’s friends gave him a gift, some money for the DIAPERS or PLENICE. They say, the more glasses you raise, the healthier the baby is going to be. But one should also keep in mind, not to forget to visit your newborn and his mother in the PORODNIŠNICA or MATERNITY HOSPITAL… and to sober up with a coffee before that!
The happy parents already have new challenges and their old habits in the first hour after giving birth. Dave learned some new words: SPODBUJATI means TO ENCOURAGE, TRESTI – TO SHAKE, UGANITI – TO GUESS, HEC or ŠALA means JOKE, and it’s good that Dave is prepared to BEDETI - BE AWAKE.
A baby is on its way to Fani and Dave… After Fani’s WATER BROKE – JI JE ODTEKLA VODA, CONTRACTIONS – POPADKI started. Dave packed Fani’s bag, he took DOCUMENTS – DOKUMENTI, the MATERNITY BOOK – MATERINSKO KNJIŽICO, BIRTH PLAN – PORODNI NAČRT, PADS – VLOŽKE, BRA – MODRČEK and MESH PANTIES – MREŽASTE HLAČKE. Now she is in the DELIVERY ROOM – PORODNA SOBA and everything is about to change, any time now…
It seems that Dave and Fani are almost ready for PARENTHOOD – STARŠEVSTVO. They need PSYHOLOGICAL PREPARATION – PSIHOLOŠKA PRIPRAVA. Dave should learn PORODNO DIHANJE – BIRTH BREATHING. POROD means CHILDBIRTH, NEGA NOVOROJENČKA is NEWBORN CARE, PLENICE are DIAPERS, DOJENJE is BREASTTFEEDING, NOSEČNOST is PREGNANCY, to BURP is RIGNITI… and Dave is still curious hot to BURP THE BABY – PODRETI KUPČEK.
Dave had a bit of an exciting day... but HE IS EXHAUSTED – JE IZČRPAN. It wasn’t easy or “ni bila mala malica”. He learned that it's good to do a FAVOUR – USLUGA for someone. He now knows that VRTEC is KINDERGARTEN, TO SAVE is VARČEVATI or ŠPARATI, ZAUPATI is TO TRUST and POJUTRIŠNJEM is THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW. HE GOT HIS NAILS PAINTED – NALAKIRAL SI JE NOHTE – and his HAIR FIXED - UREDIL LASE by the little KOZMETIČARKA – BEAUTICIAN. And now HE HAS EARNED - SI JE PRISLUŽIL a REST - POČITEK!
Dave and Fani were on the hunt for a PRAM or OTROŠKI VOZIČEK today. Fani found a perfect one in a BABY STORE or OTROŠKA TRGOVINA. It had 3 parts... first the LUPINICA or BABY CARRIER, then a KOŠARA ZA DOJENČKA or a BABY BASKET, and also a ŠPORTNI DEL or SPORTS PART. Of course, it also had a SENČNIK – PARASOL and a POKRIVALO ZA DEŽ - RAIN COVER. But seeing the price Dave thought it would be best to think it through and maybe buy a used pram for a smaller price, which led to Fani calling him a ŠKRTUN or SKOPUH – a STINGY person…
Many couples can't agree that quickly. Dave also learned some new words: MOŠKO IME is MALE NAME, ŽENSKO IME is FEMALE NAME. IZVOR means ORIGIN, ŽREB is A DRAW, ZAUPATI - TO CONFIDE IN, NIZEK TREBUH is LOW BELLY. And yet, in the end, the ULTRAZVOK – ULTRASOUND will determine what the child's name will be.
Our merry couple had their FIRST APPOINTMENT AT THE GYNECOLOGIST or PRVI OBISK PRI GINEKOLOGU after the PREGNANCY TEST or TEST NOSEČNOSTI. First they had a POSVET or TALK about the following topics: ZGODOVINA KRONIČNIH BOLEZNI – HISTORY OF CHRONICAL ILLNESSES in the family, POTRDITEV VIŠINE NOSEČNOSTI – CONFIRMING THE STAGE OF PREGNANCY, and also ZAPLETI V NOSEČNOSTI or the POSSIBLE RISKS/COMPLICATIONS IN PREGNANCY. Dave and Fani also had to fill out a QUESTIONNAIRE or VPRAŠALNIK, and Fani also had to GIVE BLOOD AND URINE - DATI KRI IN URIN. She also got a MATERNITY BOOKLET - MATERINSKA KNJIŽICA, which Fani has to carry with her DURING PREGNANCY – MED NOSEČNOSTJO and AT GIVING BIRTH - PRI PORODU.
As Fani counts the money… I mean pieces of PASTA – TESTENINE, let's see what new words they've uncovered today. CAREFULLY is PREVIDNO, ČESEN is GARLIC, DARILO is a PRESENT or GIFT, OKVIR is a FRAME, and VRČ is a JAR. Aunt Tončka was really GENEROUS – RADODARNA with her thoughtful gift, which Fani is now about TO BOIL – SKUHATI/ZAVRETI for supper. Except for the BANKNOTES – BANKOVCI, of course.
