French energy company EDF has confirmed that it has turned off one reactor of its oldest nuclear power plant in Fressenheim. The plant, located directly on the border to Germany, has drawn frequent protests in recent years.

The second and last reactor will be shut down on June 30th.

After the shutdown of this plant, France will still have another 56 pressurised water reactors in 18 nuclear plants – a number which is only topped by the USA with 98 reactors. Undoubtedly France is on first place as regards the dependency on nuclear power for electricity production – 71 % of its supply last year came from nuclear plants.
