An estimated 254,000 Slovenians live below the poverty line on less than 739 Euro per month. That's more than 19% of the population. The shocking statistic comes on the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

According to aid organisations here, many people have been badly affected by the ongoing global pandemic.

97,000 of those living below the poverty line are retirees. Thousands of those live on less than 500 Euro per month.

Unicef has said that it is unforgivable that some 41,000 children have to live in poverty. They have called on the government to do more to address the situation.

It comes amid rises in the prices of housing, food and energy in recent times.
