Leta 1473 se je rodil poljski znanstvenik Nikolaj Kopernik, utemeljitelj današnjega heliocentričnega sistema. Leta 1660 se je rodil nemški zdravnik Friedrich Hoffmann, ki je sestavil zdravilo proti srčnim in živčnim slabostim, Hoffmannove kapljice.
Leta 1923 je v Ljubljani umrl slovenski pripovednik Ivan Tavčar. Najbolj znana dela so Cvetje v jeseni, Visoška kronika in Izza kongresa.
