In 1832 Sir Walter Scott dies. He was a Scottish historical novelist, playwright, and poet. His novels and poetry are still read, famous titles include Ivanhoe, Rob Roy, The Lady of the Lake.

In 1860, in Frankfurt the German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer, known as a philosopher of pessimism, dies. He denied all new theories and findings and tried to bring philosophy to its basic problem.

In 1947 in Maine writer Stephen King is born. He became one of the world's best selling modern authors. He is known for his thriller stories, many of which have also been made into films (Carrie, Green Mile, The Shining).

In 1949, with the merger of the American, British and French occupation zones the Federal Republic of Germany is formed.

In 1952 actor Bill Murray is born.
