In 79, Mount Vesuvius erupts and covers Pompeii with a 5 metre deep blanket of lava and ash. The city was only discovered accidentally 1592. The deadly quilt protected Pompeii against the tooth of time, and the town became an important source of information about life in Roman times. Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In 1899, in Krapina the Neanderthals remains are discovered.

In 1929, in Jerusalem, Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat is born. In 1994 along with Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres he received the Nobel Peace Prize.

In 1947, in Brazil, writer Paulo Coelho is born. His book, Veronika Decides to Die is unwinds in Ljubljana, otherwise it is best known for his novel The Alchemist.

In 1987, the Slovenian professional ice hockey center Anže Kopitar is born. He is also alternate captain of the Los Angeles Kings.

In 1995, the sale begins of Microsoft Windows 95.

1975 - Queen begins to record 'Bohemian Rhapsody', the recording took three weeks.

1985 - Huey Lewis and The News are No. 1 on the American charts with 'The Power Of Love'.

1991 - Lenny Kravitz takes the top spot on the American charts with 'It Ain't Over Till It's Over'.

1996 - 'Missing' by UK duo Everything But The Girl broke the all-time US chart stay record previously held by The Four Seasons' 'December, 1963 (Oh What A Night)', when it appeared on the Billboard chart for the 55th week.

1945 - Ken Hensley, a guitarist, singer and producer best known for his work with Uriah Heep during the 1970s.

Leta 79 je izbruhnil vulkan Vezuv in z lavo ter pepelom prekril Pompeje. Mesto so po naključju našli šele leta 1592. Pompeji so bili ohranjeni in so postali pomemben vir podatkov o življenju Rimljanov. Pompeji sodijo med Unescovo svetovno dediščino.

Leta 1899 so v Krapini odkrili ostanke neandertalca.

Leta 1929 se je v Jeruzalemu rodil palestinski voditelj Jaser Arafat. Skupaj z Jicakom Rabinom in Šimonom Peresom je leta 1994 prejel Nobelovo nagrado za mir.
