ANG A young Slovene girl called Fani spent a year in the Emerald Isle working as an au-pair. After falling in love with good-humoured Irish bartender Dave, Fani lures him back to Maribor. But how can he possibly survive without knowing any Slovene? Trying to master »survival Slovene« turns out to be an incredible challenge for the highly motivated Dave, and occasionally a real nightmare for his beloved Fani. A Daily dose of Slovene language for foreigners wanting to improve their everyday Slovene, and have a laugh while doing it. Ah, yes, love is in the air and our romantic couple can’t wait to get to the MOON BAY – MESEČEV ZALIV. The BEACH – PLAŽA has no SAND – PESEK, but STONES – KAMNI. The SEA – MORJE might have some SEA URCHINS – MORSKI JEŽKI, but we’re not sure about the JELLY FISH – MEDUZE. Fani says there may not be any SHADE – SENCA, and Dave says it’s going to be an ADVENTURE – DOGODIVŠČINA or PUSTOLOVŠČINA.

The INVITATIONS – VABILA are written in SLOVENE – SLOVENŠČINA and in ENGLISH – ANGLEŠČINA. Fani found the perfect TEMPLATE – PREDLOGA and they wrote the TEXT – BESEDILO together. Now Dave just needs to pick them up at the PRINTING HOUSE – TISKARNA and BUY – KUPITI some ENVELOPES – KUVERTE.

As Dave & Fani head home to do some gardening on their balcony, let's have a look at what Dave learned this time. VRTNI CENTER is a GARDEN CENTRE, VRTNARJENJE is GARDENING, ZALIVATI RASTLINE is to WATER THE PLANTS and KARTONSKA ŠKATLA is a CARDBOARD BOX. SAJENJE is PLANTING, SEMENA are SEEDS, SADIKE are SEEDLINGS, and NAMAKALNI SISTEM is an IRRIGATION SYSTEM. And even though Dave doesn't have “GREEN FINGERS” - NI DOBER V VRTNARSTVU, at least he won't COMPLAIN - PRITOŽEVATI SE. That's because he knows that their VEGETABLES - ZELENJAVA will be grown with love and attention... and a little bit of FERTILISER – GNOJILO and COMPOST - KOMPOST.

So, the list of GUESTS/INVITES – POVABLJENCI is ready. There is the BROTHER – BRAT, SISTERS – SESTRI, PARENTS – STARŠI, GRANDPARENTS - STARI STARŠI, BEST MAN – PRIČA, BRIDESMADIES - DRUŽICE. They are also inviting FRIENDS – PRIJATELJE and COUSINS – BRATRANCE (for male) in SESTRIČNE (for female). Oh, and don’t forget the CO-WORKERS – SODELAVCI.

The FUEL PRICES – CENE GORIVA are getting higher and higher these days. So if you don’t want to drive on a RESERVE tank or REZERVA all the time you will need to spend a nice sum on a FULL TANK – POLNI REZERVOAR. The price also varies, depending on the kind of fuel: REGULAR 95-OCTANE – 95-OKTANSKI BENCIN or DIESEL FUEL - DIZEL. But people, like our Dave, don’t just buy fuel at the PETROL STATION – BENCINSKA ČRPALKA, but all sorts of things, like ice cream, beer, and even sandwiches. And that can make prices even more expensive…

Dave and Fani are one step closer to their big day – the WEDDING DAY – POROČNI DAN. They took a LOAN – POSOJILO at the BANK – BANKA. After the banker checked all their documents: the personal ID CARD – OSEBNA IZKAZNICA and PAYSLIPS – PLAČILNE LISTE, the planning can now begin…

Dave is still ALIVE – JE ŽIV and HE DONATED BLOOD – JE DAROVAL KRI. He felt a bit DIZZY – VRTELO SE MU JE, but now he’s fine and he’s HAPPY – VESEL while he is HELPING TO SAVE LIVES – POMAGA REŠEVATI ŽIVLJENJA. NEXT TIME - NASLEDNJIČ everything will be better. He’s not afraid of the NEEDLE – IGLA anymore, so it will be easier to ROLL UP THE SLEEVE – ZAVIHATI ROKAV.

Dave decided that he wants to learn some Slovene SLANG or SLENG. Fani told him that the saying »Si že auf?« means “Are you awake?”, and that »šautati« means “to shout”. One of the funniest sayings in Dave’s opinion was »Kva si pa ti dons tko ušmekan?« or “Why are you all dressed up today?”. And there were many other quotes… But “that’s enough for now” or “To je to, za toti dnar!”

It looks like the wedding plans will have to wait, but Dave is not wasting time. He learned that IMPORTANT is POMEMBNO, LATER is KASNEJE, PLAN is NAČRT, WEDDING GUEST is SVAT and DUTIES are OBVEZNOSTI or NALOGE. He also learned that MUSIC is GLASBA, FOOD is HRANA, CAKE is TORTA and that they will need a LOAN - POSOJILO for the wedding that Fani wants...

Dave got a THORN - TRN in his finger when he was lifting a BRANCH - VEJA. He thought it might have been another KLOP – TICK, or even a SPLINTER - TRSKA or SKODLA. Fani SORTED THINGS OUT though – “ONA JE ZRIHTALA”. She does know that Dave is a bit of a HYPOCHONDRIAC – HIPOHONDER. And no, Dave won't need a CAST - GIPS, or BERGLE - CRUTCHES... just a few drops of schnapps… and some COURAGE - POGUM!

As Dave slowly recovers from his 'relaxing' massage, let's see what he learned today. MASAŽA is a MASSAGE, WELLNESS is a SPA, TERMIN is AN APPOINTMENT, a VOZEL is a KNOT and a PLAŠČ is A ROBE or DRESSING GOWN. The massage was SPROŠČUJOČA – RELAXING, at least for Fani it was. Unfortunately, Dave has a few BRUISES - MODRICE on his BACK - HRBET. But it's only going to be ZAČASNO - TEMPORARY. I'm sure that he'll feel much less TENSE - NAPET. He might even go back for another massage with Fani someday… or... maybe not.

The wonderful Irish adventure is nearing its end with Dave’s invitation to lunch. An opportunity to learn new words: TJULENJ is SEAL, PRIPOROČATI – TO RECOMMEND, GOVEDINA is BEEF, ENOLONČNICA – STEW, KRVAVICE are BLACK PUDDING, DIMLJEN is SMOKED, LOSOS is SALMON, PASTIR is SHEPHARD… and we have TO ADMIT - PRIZNATI, Dave’s SPEECH - GOVOR was great.

A really gorgeous trip and Dave shows Ireland's beauties. In the JEZERO or LAKE there are lot of fish… KRAP - CARP, ŠČUKA – PIKE and POSTRV- TROUT. Travelers also learned that OTOK is ISLAND, GRAD is CASTLE, SREDNJEVEŠKI means MEDIEVAL, STOLP is TOWER, STOLETJE is CENTURY, HRAST is OAK and PRITISK – PRESSURE.

Using also new Slovenian words: RODNO MESTO means BIRTHPLACE, HOMETOWN is DOMAČI KRAJ, SOLZE are TEARS, POGREB is FUNERAL, OSUPLJIVO is STUNNING, POKRAJINA – SCENERY, ZGODOVINA – HISTORY, NARAVNE ZNAMENITOSTI are NATURAL ATTRACTIONS, KROŽNA VOŽNJA is ROUND TRIP, PRELAZ is MOUNTAIN PASS, GROFIJA is COUNTY, KRALJESTVO – KINGDOM, USTANOVLJENO – ESTABLISHED and Pero is not a SVETNIK – a SAINT yet :)

A new country and completely different customs for Slovenes. Dave, however, is forced to learn new words. SMRČATI is TO SNORE, UTRUJEN means TIRED, ZAJTRK is BREAKFAST, BLIZU is CLOSE, MLEČNO means MILKY, KLIN is WEDGE, DVIGNITI ROKE – RAISE YOUR HANDS, OBŽALOVATI means TO REGRET. ŠUNKA is HAM and FIŽOL – BEANS, and they’re on the plate at an Irish breakfast.

It is really useful to use the flight time to learn new languages. This time some POMEMBNE – IMPORTANT words: PRISRČNO means WARM or KIND, LJUBEZEN is LOVE, SAMOZAVEST – SELF-CONFIDENCE, TRD is HARD, SEDEŽ is SEAT, OČARATI means TO ENCHANT, and it was SLINASTO – SLIMY and a BAD TRY – SLAB POSKUS from Pero.

Everyone is happy and already on the plane. Let’s repeat some new words: DOKUMENTI are DOCUMENTS, OSEBNA IZKAZNICA means ID CARD, VELJAVNA is VALID, SEDETI SKUPAJ – TO SIT TOGETHER, POSTATI SLABO means TO GET SICK, POTNIK or SOPOTNIK is PASSENGER, VZGLAVNIK is PILLOW, VARNOST is SAFETY, NAPOTKI or NAVODILA are INSTRUCTIONS, VARNOSTNI PAS is SAFETY BELT and we hope nobody will use the VREČKA ZA BRUHANJE – VOMITING BAG.

Today Dave learned that visiting a PEDIKURA or PEDICURE isn’t so bad, plus he also learned a few new words… ETERIČNA OLJA are ESSENTIAL OILS, NOHTI are NAILS, NOHTI NA NOGAH are TOENAILS and MANIKURA is MANICURE. So now, no more HOLES or LUNKJE on the POSTELJNA PREVLEKA or BED COVER, as Dave’s toenails and feet are “GLADKI KOT RITKA”… well, isn’t that something :)

Dave learned today that LATE means POZEN, ZGODEN is EARLY, PRIDRUŽITI SE – TO JOIN, NEČAKINJA – NIECE, BRATRANEC – COUSIN, TURISTIČNA AGENCIJA is TOURIST AGENCY, RODNO MESTO – BIRTHPLACE, DOMAČI KRAJ - HOMETOWN, IZLET is TRIP, SEVERNA OBALA means NORTH COAST, ZAŽELJEN – DESIRABLE, JUGO-ZAHODNO is SOUTH-WEST…

This is definitely not going to be an easy task for Dave. He knows that WORK – DELO, STRENGTHENS A PERSON – KREPI ČLOVEKA. But his friends have a BRILLIANT IDEA – IZVRSTNO IDEJO. They want an organized TRIP – IZLET to Ireland. They are ZAMIŠLJENI – THOUGHTFUL and Dave must TURN ON HIS BRAIN – VKLOPITI MOŽGANE. They already want to FIX A DATE – DOLOČITI DATUM, but first they need to ask for A FEW DAYS OFF – NEKAJ PROSTIH DNI. And so many ideas of what to see…
