ANG A young Slovene girl called Fani spent a year in the Emerald Isle working as an au-pair. After falling in love with good-humoured Irish bartender Dave, Fani lures him back to Maribor. But how can he possibly survive without knowing any Slovene? Trying to master »survival Slovene« turns out to be an incredible challenge for the highly motivated Dave, and occasionally a real nightmare for his beloved Fani. A Daily dose of Slovene language for foreigners wanting to improve their everyday Slovene, and have a laugh while doing it. Spoznavanje »preživetvene slovenščine« je za izjemno motiviranega Irca neverjeten izziv, za njegovo Fani pa občasno prava nočna mora. Dave and Fani will discuss kids tommow, but today Dave learned FAMILY is DRUŽINA, KIDS are OTROCI, BOY is FANTEK and GIRL is PUNČKA. TOO EARLY is PREZGODAJ and YOUNG is MLAD. They agreed there's a whole FUTURE – PRIHODNOST in front of them and that TOMORROW – JUTRI everything will sort itself out…
It was quite an exhausting day for our couple, but it was worth it as they will soon be able to eat home-grown vegetables. Dave learned many new Slovene words as well, as they planted KROMPIR – POTATOES, FIŽOL – BEANS, KUMARICE – CUCUMBERS, PARADIŽNIK – TOMATOES and SOLATA – SALAD. But before they planted the seeds, some hard work had to be done, which involved using a SHOVEL – LOPATA, MOTIKA – HOE and GRABLJE – RAKE. But there is nothing like a home-grown salad and French fries, right?
Today Dave learned that SLASTNO means DELICIOUS, KIHATI is TO SNEEZE, KOLCANJE is HICCUPS, VIDIM – I SEE, SLIŠIM – I HEAR, VOHAM – I SMELL, POČUTIM – I FEEL and LEPO DIŠI – IT SMELLS GREAT! And the next time he goes out, he should try to avoid POLLEN – CVETNI PRAH... and mini muffins!
Today Dave learned that some people can be RUDE – NESRAMEN or NESRAMNA, UNGRATEFUL - NEHVALEŽEN or NEHVALEŽNA, and IMPATIENT – NEUČAKAN or NEUČAKANA. We all get MOODY – TEČEN or TEČNA, from time to time. Sometimes we do things that are STUPID or SILLY – NEUMNO, but also things that are UNBELIEVABLE - NEVERJETNO. Let's hope that Dave's day gets better when Fani's parents visit and it turns out to be NEPOZABNO – UNFORGETTABLE!
What a day for Dave... he had never been in such a situation before! But still what new words has he learned today? NIMA SMISLA - NO SENSE, SVET - WORLD, SVET SE MI JE PODRL – MY WORLD IS SHATTERED, ODSELITI SE – TO MOVE AWAY, STAROST - AGE, STARA KOKLJA – OLD CHICKEN, JUHA – SOUP, SAMSKI - SINGLE… and VREDNO JE POSKUSITI – IT’S WORTH A TRY... always :)
Dave is a great host…and a real grill master. Again, he learned some new words: MALE SKRIVNOSTI - LITTLE SECRETS, OGENJ - FIRE, PLAMEN - FLAME, ŽEJEN - THIRSTY, PERUTNIČKE - CHICKEN WINGS, RAŽNJIČI - SKEWERS, SHRAMBA - PANTRYand HUJŠATI - TO LOSE WEIGHT. Dave also knows very well what helps when it’s hot! :)
Dave is taking his Slovene learning very seriously .. khm khm.. Anyway, IN THE LIBRARY – V KNJIŽNICI he learned that a BOOK is a KNJIGA, a LIBRARIAN is a KNJIŽNIČAR/KA. Fani likes to read LOVE STORIES – LJUBEZENSKE ZGODBE and to RECOMMEND is PRIPOROČATI. He already knows ANIMALS are ŽIVALI, FAMILY is DRUŽINA, and from today he also knows that a FAIRYTALE is a PRAVLJICA and a PROFESSION is POKLIC. He needs to be a MEMBER – ČLAN and he needs his CARD or IZKAZNICA.
Well, Dave and Fani really had a stormy morning! Well, it was for Fani… but Dave, he learned some new words… SPIDER is PAJEK, TERRIBLE is GROZNO, GREY HAIR is SIV LAS and obviously that means a DISASTER – KATASTROFA. He also learned that HAIRDRESSER is FRIZER, TO PULL OUT is IZPULITI, MONDAY is PONEDELJEK, SCISSORS are ŠKARJE and TWEEZERS is PINCETA.
Well, while Dave can't sleep, he can practice his Slovene counting. That night he also learned COFFEE is KAVA, MOON is LUNA, which has this strong POWER – MOČ that is even stronger when the moon is FULL – POLNA. COUNTING SHEEP – PREŠTEVANJE OVAC doesn't help, also not DEEP BREATHS – GLOBOKI VDIHI.
There's a long way to a healthy lifestyle for Dave and Fani, but they‘ve started… And Dave has also learned TO AGREE - STRINJATI SE. A RUN –TEK is a GOOD IDEA – DOBRA ZAMISEL and a WARM-UP – OGREVANJE is very IMPORTANT – POMEMBNO. He now also knows that ANKLES are GLEŽNJI, TO CIRCLE is KROŽITI, and that NECK is VRAT in Slovene. As Fani said, HAM AND EGGS – JAJCA IN SLANINA are not healthy, but a smoothie is, especially when it contains GREENS –ZELENJE like SPINACH – ŠPINAČA, BROCCOLI – BROKOLI and KALE –OHROVT.
Dave is very lucky that cleaner Milena is so HELPFUL - USTREŽLJIVA. Today he learned that GNJAVITI is TO BOTHER/TO PESTER, GARDEROBA is WARDROBE, KUHAR is COOK, LUŠTEN or LUŠTNA is CUTE, GRENKO is BITTER, TREZEN is SOBER, PIJAN is DRUNK … And a lot of new ŽGANJICE - SPIRITS were presented to him: BOROVNIČEVEC - BLUEBERRY SCHNAPPS, VILJAMOVKA - WILLIAMS PEAR SCHNAPPS, HRUŠKOVEC - PEAR SCHNAPPS but sweet, TAUŽNTROŽA, TRAVARICA… and SCHNAPPS with MEDICINAL HERBS – ZDRAVILNA ZELIŠČA …. We can only hope Dave has a very good memory :)
So, the FIGHT – PREPIR is over. The morning is GOOD – DOBRO, Fani is not ANGRY – JEZNA anymore. And Dave learned that I’M SORRY is ŽAL MI JE. US TWO/WE is MIDVA, NOT FAIR is NI POŠTENO, APARTMENT is STANOVANJE and the RULES are PRAVILA. A PROMISE is OBLJUBA and their KITCHEN – KUHINJA is now CLEAN – ČISTA. Dave also learned that Fani loves those kinds of SURPRISES – PRESENEČENJA.
It's pretty tense at Dave and Fani‘s. But no matter what, Dave is learning Slovene in every situation… Today he is mostly shocked, but still he learned that MOVIE/FILM is FILM, SERIOUS is RESEN, WRONG is NAROBE and a MESS is NERED. To WASH DISHES is OPRATI POSODO, to TAKE OUT THE GARBAGE - ODNESTI SMETI, a WASHING MACHINE is a PRALNI STROJ and to WASH HAIR – is UMITI LASE. And now he also knows what it looks like when Fani gets really MAD – JEZNA. Let’s wait until tomorrow to see how the fight continues...
Dave can wake up early, even on Sundays … if it's a SUNNY DAY – SONČEN DAN and if the EARLY HOUR – RANA or ZGODNJA URA has sense. His motivation is high as soon he realizes that NAREZEK is a MEAT PLATE (COLD CUTS) with DOMAČA PAŠTETA - HOME MADE PATE and ZASEKA – MINCED LARD with ONION – ČEBULA… He even forgets about all the attributes of his friend's new mistress: DOLGE NOGE – LONG LEGS, ZELENE OČI – GREEN EYES and VELIKE USTNICE – BIG LIPS.
Today Dave went NAKUPOVATI - SHOPPING to the NAKUPOVALNO SREDIŠČE – SHOPPING CENTRE.He got a new SRAJCA - SHIRT, MAJICA - T-SHIRT, KAVBOJKE – JEANS... but he didn't buy any HLAČE - TROUSERS. Fani wanted to get him a new 'BUNDA' or WINTERCOAT... in April. And Dave learned that you need to change quickly in the CHANGING ROOMS - KABINE.He might need to bring a book with him next weekend though on his next trip for “nakupovanje”.
Today Dave feels the atmosphere of a GASILKA VESELICA – a FIREFIGHTER'S PARTY. He met a lot of VESELI LJUDJE – HAPPY PEOPLE and learned a few new words: NARODNA NOŠA – NATIONAL COSTUME, ŠKORNJI are BOOTS, OSVEŽILNO means REFRESHING, DEŽEVATI is RAINING, KRANJSKA KLOBASA is a CARNIOLAN SAUSAGE, PLES is DANCE and ROŽICA is small ROSE.
Today Dave's workout was DIGGING – KOPANJE with a SHOVEL – z LOPATO. He learned that Fani's mother has a HERB GARDEN – ZELIŠČNI VRT where she grows HERBS – ZELIŠČA. There are some VEGETABLES - ZELENJAVA that we PLANT – SADIMO, and some that we SOW – SEJEMO… For a big FAMILY – DRUŽINA it’s important to have a big GARDEN – VRT. Oh, and MELISSA (LEMON BALM) – that's MELISA – an herb.
Today Dave learned that POPOLDAN is AFTERNOON, DOPOLDAN is MORNING, POČITEK is REST, GLAVOBOL is a HEADACHE, PREHLAD is a COLD, ČASOPIS is a NEWSPAPER, or 'CAJTNG' if you live in Štajerska, 'SCHNAPPS' is seen as a cure for many ailments… and, no, Jože does not work as a secret agent… He just finds things ZANIMIVO - INTERESTING.
Dave and Fani are a couple, which means there’s two of them. And when THEY want to describe what THEY’RE doing, they have to use the first person of the Slovene dual form, which ends with the letters “v” and “a”. For example, THE TWO OF US – MIDVA: PLETE-VA - KNIT, DELA-VA - WORK, se POGOVARJA-VA - TALK, SEDI-VA - SIT, POSLUŠA-VA - LISTEN, se SMEJI-VA - LAUGH, se OBJEMA-VA - HUG, PLAVA-VA - SWIM, TEKA-VA - RUN, SMUČA-VA - SKI, PIJE-VA - DRINK, JE-VA - EAT in se STRINJA-VA - AGREE.
What a mess! Dave just got into a lot of trouble for mispronouncing one word. In fact, he only got one letter wrong! Instead of OKUSIL – to TASTE, he said OKUŽIL – to INFECT! Dave would've been better off using POSKUSITI – TO TRY. »Rad bi poskusil torto« means «I'd like to try the cake«. »Rad bi okusil torto« means »I'd like to taste the cake«. But »Rad bi okužil torto« means »I'd like to infect the cake«. So now, Dave has to prove to everyone that he's not ILL – BOLAN, but ZDRAV – HEALTHY!
