ANG A young Slovene girl called Fani spent a year in the Emerald Isle working as an au-pair. After falling in love with good-humoured Irish bartender Dave, Fani lures him back to Maribor. But how can he possibly survive without knowing any Slovene? Trying to master »survival Slovene« turns out to be an incredible challenge for the highly motivated Dave, and occasionally a real nightmare for his beloved Fani. A Daily dose of Slovene language for foreigners wanting to improve their everyday Slovene, and have a laugh while doing it. TENDER, LOVE AND CARE – NEŽNOST, LJUBEZEN IN SKRB is what Dave has to offer. And what more can Fani ask for? He did not bring her any HEMP – KONOPLJE, or any CBD and THC DROPS – KAPLJICE. But he did learn the following: ZELIŠČAR – HERBALIST, ZELIŠČA – HERBS, RAVNOTEŽJE – BALANCE, STOPNICE – STAIRS, BOLI – HURTS, and PROHIBITED – PREPOVEDANO.
While Dave says goodbye to his CHIPS or FRENCH FRIES - POMFRIT, and his hotdog, let's see what he learned on his little shopping trip. POHIŠTVO is FURNITURE, which he'll have to put into the PRTLJAŽNIK or “KUFERAM” – THE BOOT OF THE CAR. He'll also have to squeeze in a few other items, like A PICTURE FRAME - OKVIR ZA SLIKE, A STORAGE BOX - ŠKATLA ZA SHRANJEVANJE, A SOAP DISPENSER - RAZPRŠILNIK ZA MILO, and HANGERS - OBEŠALNIKI. We bet that Dave wishes he had a university LECTURE – PREDAVANJE now, instead of a long drive back home.
Dave finally has a Slovenian ONLINE BANK – SPLETNA BANKA. The REGISTRACIJA – REGISTRATION was no problem, but there are so many new words: STANJE NA RAČUNU means ACCOUNT BALANCE, PLAČILA are PAYMENTS, DATUM ZAPADLOSTI is DATE OF MATURITY, ZNESEK – AMOUNT, NAMEN PLAČILA – THE PURPOSE OF PAYMENT… and one important lesson to remember: DENAR NI VSE – MONEY ISN'T EVERYTHING.
If you’ve ever read the Guinness Book of World Records you've noticed that Slovenes are famous for their crazy records, but what they don’t like is a PREPIH or DRAUGHT. Slovenes are very superstitious about that, as they fear they will catch a COLD or PREHLAD. Dave even made a joke about it, that the fear of a draught is the reason that Slovenes only have two WIND TURBINES or VETRNE ELEKTRARNE. But Fani told him, that if the air inside is STUFFY or ZATOHLO, Slovenes would rather go outside, no matter how strong the wind is…
Fani isn’t too enthusiastic about Dave’s new idea. She doesn’t want him to grow any facial hair. A BEARD is BRADA, a MOUSTACHE is BRKI, SIDEBURNS are ZALISCI, HAIR is LASJE. She wants him to use a SHAVER – BRIVNIK, so that he doesn’t look like THE GREEN MAN – ZELENI JURIJ.
Looks like this is going to be a hard day for the trio. But Dave knows from now on that REZ STARE TRTE means the PRUNING OF THE OLD VINE, CEPIČ is a SCION, POTOMKA means A DESCENDANT, MESTNI VINIČAR means WINE DRESSER… But still… Dave is more interested in the products of SLOVENE WINEMAKERS – SLOVENSKI VINARJI. Na zdravje! Cheers!
So, while Dave's past and current better halves compare notes, let's look at some of the words that he (and Heidi) have just learned. SURFING is DESKANJE, SNOWBOARDING is DESKANJE NA SNEGU, SKATING is DRSANJE and SKYDIVING is SKOK S PADALOM or PADALSTVO. For languages: FRENCH is FRANCOŠČINA, ITALIAN is ITALIJANŠČINA, ENGLISH is ANGLEŠČINA, GERMAN is NEMŠČINA and CHINESE is KITAJŠČINA. And we've also found out that Dave IS AFRAID OF HEIGHTS – GA JE STRAH VIŠINE, SPIDERS - PAJKOV and LITTLE DOGS - MAJHNIH KUŽKOV. And he's probably afraid of Heidi and Fani's CONVERSATION - POGOVOR, right now, too. Bogi Dave!
Fani got to meet Dave's BIVŠA or EX-GIRLFRIEND Heidi today. She was a little bit LJUBOSUMNA – JEALOUS, but she didn't need to be. Dave is also a little bit LJUBOSUMEN, it seems. But there is no need for either one of them to be jealous… it's all WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE and in the past – or LANSKI SNEG in Slovene. Dave also learned that FRIZURA is a HAIRSTYLE and PAR DNI means A COUPLE OF DAYS. Let's see how they all get along… TOMORROW – JUTRI.
Today Dave learned more about BERRIES – JAGODIČEVJE. We have STRAWBERRIES – JAGODE, RASPBERRIES – MALINE, BLUEBERRIES – BOROVNICE, BLACKBERRIES – ROBIDE, CRANBERRIES – BRUSNICE, GOOSEBERRIES – KOSMULJE, DOGBERRIES – DRNULJE, ELDERBERRIES – BEZGOVE JAGODE, and CURRANTS – RIBEZ.
Dave and Fani tried RAFTING – ČOLNARJENJE today. Their host, who was a LOCAL - DOMAČIN, told them they had to wear a HELMET – ČELADA, NEOPRENE BOOTS – NEOPRENSKE ŠKORNJE, a LIFE VEST – REŠILNI JOPIČ, and use a PADDLE - VESLO. Going down the river proved to be exciting, as it had a couple of RAPIDS – BRZICE and WATERFALLS - SLAPOVI. And Dave found out that the river was not that DEEP - GLOBOKA, and that it was mostly SHALLOW – PLITVA.
A COUPLE’S LIFE or ŽIVLJENJE PARA… Sometimes it’s not LIVING IN PARADISE or ŽIVETI V RAJU and it’s always good when we have friends to talk to, even if it’s a silly conversation. Our two friends today found out they have a lot in common. They both feel like SOLDIERS or VOJAKA, and their better halves are the GENERALS or GENERALA that are always asking them to do some CHORES or OPRAVILA and they call them NEZREL or IMMATURE. So thank God, there is a SAFE HAVEN or ZATOČIŠČE to talk about it…the bar;)
3 against 1 for good luck…:) Today Dave learned that animals can bring LUCK – SREČA and also BAD LUCK – NESREČA. An example for bad lack: a BLACK CAT – ČRNA MAČKA that crosses the road. And examples for good luck are: PIGEON POOP – GOLOBJI KAKEC and a LADYBUG – PIKAPOLONICA. Also, a COIN – KOVANEC found on the ground brings luck. And what Dave already knew, a FOUR-LEAF CLOVER – ŠTIRIPERESNA DETELJICA also brings good luck. So, happy day for Dave!
While poor Dave spends the next part of his afternoon in the shop looking for things, let us take a look at what he's learned today. POLŽKI are SNAILS, METULJČKI are BUTTERFLIES and ŠKOLJKE are SHELLS. They're all types of PASTA or TESTENINE of course. AKCIJA is a SPECIAL OFFER and POPUST is a DISCOUNT. Let's hope that Dave at least catches the second half of the game today.
Finally, the day has come when Fani gave up before Dave did… Dave really enjoyed CYCLING - KOLESARJENJE around the Goričko region. With his HELMET - ČELADA and BICYCLE – KOLO he made some kilometers. And Fani, SHE QUIT – JE ODNEHALA. She called her GRANDPA - DEDEK and left Dave to enjoy Goričko.
Our happy couple enjoyed some work as they followed the CALL OF NATURE or KLIC NARAVE by planting TREE SEEDLINGS - SADIKE. They brought some GLOVES or ROKAVICE and they got a MOTIKA or a HOW, and a SHOVEL or LOPATA. They felt tired after a whole day of work for MOTHER NATURE or MATI NARAVA and enjoyed some food and wine. But Dave decided to just stick with “wine and dine” and to leave the HOJA PO ŽERJAVICI or WALK ON EMBERS to professionals…
Apparently, the day at the farm will end happily. Dave learned that MESO IZ TUNKE means MEAT IN MINCED LARD, NAČRT means PLAN, GNOJ is MANURE, GNOJITI – FERTILIZE, VILE – MANURE FORKS, SAMOKOLNICA - WHEELBARROW, JABLANE - APPLE TREES, MALINE - RASPBERRIES, ROBIDE – BLACKBERRIES, MARELICE – APRICOTS, BRESKEV – PEACH … and they are still confused if TOPINAMBUR is really a JERUSALEM ARTICHOKE.
Dave prepares for the day at the ORGANIC FARM – EKOLOŠKA KMETIJA. He needs OLD CLOTHES – STARA OBLAČILA and RUBBER BOOTS – GUMIJASTI ŠKORNJI. He can’t go BAREFOOT - BOS. He’s practicing some new words like ŽIVINOREJA - LIVESTOCK FARMING, SAMOOSKRBA is SELF-SUFFICIENCY, ZELENJAVNI VRT – VEGETABLE GARDEN, KOZA - GOAT, KOKOŠ - CHICKEN and he already knows that a VINSKA KLET is a WINE CELLAR.
There are a lot of TREES - DREVESA in Slovenia. In fact, 64% of Slovenia is covered by forests. And today Dave learned that the WOODS or FOREST is called a GOZD. Also, HRAST is OAK, BUKEV is BEECH, LIPA is LINDEN, BREZA – BIRCH, BOR – PINE, SMREKA is SPRUCE, LUBJE is BARK and a NEVESTA is a BRIDE.
Dave arrived at the GAS or PETROL STATION – BENCINSKA ČRPALKA with a “bomba”. But he didn’t have a real bomb with him. A PLINSKA BOMBA is another word for what Slovene’s call PLINSKA JEKLENKA or GAS CYLINDER. Fani likes using GAS – PLIN for making her COFFEE – KAVA, and not ELECTRICITY – ELEKTRIKA, which she says is EXPENSIVE – DRAGA.
Dave has had an enjoyable time at the FONTANA PIVA ŽALEC – ŽALEC BEER FOUNTAIN! He has learned the words for... TO GO ON A TRIP – ITI NA IZLET, A GLASS – KOZAREC, GLASSES/SPECTACLES – OČALA, ARE YOU OK? – SI V REDU?, THE BEST – NAJBOLJŠI, OPTIKA – OPTICIAN, DRUNK – PIJAN, and YOU ARE IN TROUBLE! – TI SI V TEŽAVAH!
