Brexit

Having now had an assurance from a vote in Westminster on the 13th March it is believed at present that a no deal on leaving the EU is not what the British parliament wants. So on the morning of 14th March 2019 I was joined by the British Ambassador to Slovenia H.E. Sophie Honey to discuss how British expats should be preparing and also how Slovenes should understand a bit of what is taking place.

Brexit implications

The negotiations appear rather slow over the issue of Great Britain leaving the European Union concerned, as the remaining members have to be prepared for the impacts of this event. This discussion features just a few of the attendees comments from a recent round-table organised by the British and Slovene Chamber of Commerce. The excerpts come from Pawel Peplinski, Country Managing partner at PwC; Jeremy Browne, the City of London’s representative to the E.U.; from the regions largest banking organisation Blaž Brodnjak, President of the Management Board of NLB and Miha Košak, Special Advisor at Emona Capital.

Business Growth with Kevin Jackon

Business matters seem to be a preoccupation for many but just occasionally the principles can be viewed in a fresh way. Sometimes due to changes in society, sometimes because of a major financial change and sometimes it's due to new technologies. Right now it's all three so when the British Slovene Chamber of Commerce arranged a talk from the Business Growth Specialist I thought we could all benefit from listening and I went along.

Media Marketing

The world of marketing is very complex and what we buy and how much we pay for almost everything is influenced by the way the marketing works. With major conferences like SEMPL, which takes place here in Slovenia this month, I thought it would be interesting to hear from those who make the decisions. The conversation is with: Valerija Prevolšek Director of MediaPool Barbara Modič, Managing Director of the agency Pristop Media Eva Jurca Marketing Manager of Masivna Pasivna having previously held this position for Akrapovič and TAM-Europe and Jasna Grbič Director of Tattoo Care

Business Transparency

Organised by the British Slovene Chamber of Commerce with Transparency International Slovenia at the Centre for Innovative Entrepeneurship at NLB in Ljubljana this discussion was very interesting as it discussed all levels of transparency from curruption to simple gifts and included the Private and Public Sectors. This is a shortened version of a 2 hour discussion but the excerpts are unedited and include the Minister of Public Administration, Boris Koprivnikar; The President of Ampelus Holdings, Andrej Božič; The General Manager of Glaxo Smith Kline, Nuno Logar; The Director of Compliance and Integrity at NLB, Pok Proprotnik; The Senior Programme Officer, UK from Transparency International Sarah Harris; and also The Chief Compliance Officer of Slovene Railways, Martin Logar amongst the panelists.

Miro Cerar

The recent Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe meeting in Ljublajna gave me an opportunity to have a discussion with Prime Minister Cerar. He spoke about the work of the alliance as well as his past two and a half years in office. The many pressing issues for the European union as well as achievements and the work in progress here at home were all on his agenda.

Young Musicians

Opportunities for new musical talent, in particular for young bands and composers, is a hot topic so anyone who is keen to offer advice and look at possible changes to help the industry is very valuable. At the recent CompComp, a competition for young composers, I had an opportunity to talk to many people personally involved in the music industry here in Slovenia. This podcast is a montage of the short conversations with them. The comments come from Rok Trkaj, Tomaž OćRous, Tinkara Kovač, Hannah Mancini, and Aleš Kosina from SAZAS. foto:Urška Boljkovac/Kino Šiška

Ljubljana Advances

It not may be clear to everyone that other countries around Europe see Slovenia and its capital Ljubljana as a leading example of making a city clean more pedestrian friendly and remarkably good at organising both waste and city transport. In this podcast I invited the two leading figures for these subjects to discuss the last 10 years of progress.

Russia and Ukraine

My discussion with correspondent Andrej Stopar on My Life, My Music was such a valuable insight into the understanding of the Russian postion within Europe that I felt it worth podcasting a new version with nothing edited and just words. Andrej spent 8 years living in Moscow and has clear views on how the Rusian people see themselves. It's something we all need to understand before we comment.

TALK SLOVENIA - FOREIGN INVESTMENT

Foreign investment in Slovene business is vital to the financial sucess of the country. So are companies still keen to come here? There are many good examples of sucessful companies new and old but are enough new such ventures being actively sought? Next week a conference arranged by the Slovenia Times takes place to examine the situation. To discuss this I am joined in the studio by the CEO of THe Slovenia Times, Brane Krajnik. the Executive Director of the American Chamber of Commerce, Ajša Vodnik and the CEO of Tam Durabus, Holger Postl.

Crime and Punishment

Does anyone really believe that sending those who have committed crimes to prison will change their behaviour? Is our society really mature about the way we see offences against our moral and evolved legal rules? If you really think prison will solve the problem of a modern society then maybe the guests in this discussion will surprise you, Slovenia is remarkably advanced in the way it views the treatment of criminals but there is still a long way to go. Listen to wise words regarding corruption from Goran Klemenčič, the prosecution view from Boštjan Škrlec, direct contact with the perpetrators with specialist in criminal law Marko Bošnjak, and author of “Punishment Without Crime” professor Dragan Petrovec.

SLOVENE TOURISM

12% Slovenia's gross national product comes from tourism, it's the biggest single money earner and so is a vital part of the Slovene economy. It makes it an interesting topic and one which has many areas of interest and concern to Slovenes and non-Slovene alike. This programme looks at the quality, the customers, the opportunities, the probelms and the future. Discussing the issues are mag.Karmen Novarlič Head of the Department of Tourism - Spirit Slovenia, Mr Iztok Albauer, Director of the Comunity of Slovene Spa and Healing Facilities, Mrs Eva Štravs-Podlogar, Director of the Tourist Board Bled and Mr Varsec-Rednik Marketing Manager of Terme Olimia.

America

If you have ever wondered about the strength of the relationship between Slovenia and America this programme should answer some of your questions. The discussion with H.E. Joseph Mussomeli Americas ambassador to Slovenia (2009 to the presnt) and H.E. Roman Kirn Slovenias ambassador to America (2009 to 2013) is enlightening, touching and even amusing. Your thoughts about both countries might be changed!

25.03.2014

Social Unrest

If you are not Slovene you may not fully understand why so many people here got very upset at the establishment and in particular the 2012 mayor of Maribor, I invited a few people to explain why they were prepared to stand in protest. I hope that this discussionwill show the strong feelings that existed at the time and maybe point the way to some resolutions for the future, Beware this show contains strong language!.
