In 1865, English short-story writer, poet, and novelist Rudyard Kipling is born. One of his best known stories is The Jungle Book.

In 1942, writer and leading member of the dissident movement of the 1960s and 1970s Vladimir Bukovsky is born.

In 1953, the first colour televisions go on sale in the U. S.

In 1975, the American golfer Tiger Woods is born.

In 2006, in Baghdad Iraqi President Saddam Hussein is executed by hanging.

1967 - On the American singles chart No. 1 is The Beatles with ‘Hello Goodbye', in second place are Gladys Knight and the Pips with 'I Heard It Through The Grapevine' and in third place are The Monkees with 'Daydream Believer'.

2001 - Nickelback takes the No. 1 spot on the American charts with 'How To Remind Me'.

2004 - American jazz player, clarinettist and composer Artie Shaw dies.
