In 885 St. Method, brother of St. Cyril, dies. Together they invented the Glagolithic alphabet.

In 648 BC the old Greeks first describe a solar eclipse.

In 1199 the English King Richard the Lionheart dies.

In 1490 the Hungarian King Matija Korvin dies.

In 1652 the Dutch sailor Jan van Riebeeck establishes the camp Good Hope, in which ships could purchase foodstuffs, repair ships and cure ill sailors. The camp developed over the years and became the city Cape Town.

In 1896 the first Olympics of the Modern Age begin in Athens. Only men compete, 311 sportsmen from 14 countries. The largest numbers of competitors are from Greece, Germany and France.

In 1941 without a declaration of war, German soldiers attack Belgrade and razed it to the ground. This was the beginning of the occupation of Yugoslavia.

In 1947 the Slovene artist and illustrator Matija Jama dies. He is considered as the greatest landscape artists among Slovenian impressionists. His known works are Vrbe, Hiše v snegu, Krave na Kolpi, and Kolo.

In 2009 a strong earthquake shakes the central part of Italy. The worst affected town was L'Aquila, where 300 people died.

MUSIC HISTORY

1968 - Simon and Garfunkel are No. 1 on the American albums chart with 'The Graduate'. On the album are also the songs Sounds of Silence and Mrs. Robinson.

1985 - Paul Young is No. 1 on the British albums chart with 'The Secret Of Association'. On the album is also verytime You Go Away.

1998 - Country singer Tammy Wynette dies at the age of 55. Her greatest hit was 'Stand By Your Man'.

In 1991 with the group The KLF she recorded 'Justified and Ancient' which became a No. 1 hit in 18 countries.

Leta 885 je umrl sv. Metod, brat sv. Cirila, s katerim sta izumila pisavo glagolico.

Leta 648 pr. n. št. so stari Grki prvič opisali Sončev mrk.

Leta 1199 je umrl angleški kralj Rihard I. Levjesrčni. Leta 1490 je umrl madžarski kralj Matija Korvin.

Leta 1652 je nizozemski mornar Jan van Riebeeck ustanovil kamp Dobrega upanja, v katerem so si lahko ladje kupile zaloge. Iz kampa je nastalo mesto Cape Town.

Leta 1667 je močan potres uničil velik del Dubrovnika.

Leta 1896 so se v Atenah začele prve olimpijske igre moderne dobe. Tekmovali so samo moški, 311 športnikov iz 14 držav. Največ predstavnikov so imeli Grki, Nemci in Francozi.
