RAJHENBURG CASTLE                                                                                                                             Slovenia is abundant in castles and manor houses. Hundreds were once scattered all over its territory due to its important strategic position. Some have disappeared without a trace, many have been left in ruins, but there is also an increasing number of those that have been beautifully restored and given a new purpose. One of these is Rajhenburg Castle near Brestanica in the east of the country, which is one of the oldest in Slovenia.
BIOLOGIST MIHA KROFEL
There are three major European beasts still living in Slovenia: the bear, the wolf and the lynx. While the populations of bears, which is the largest, and the wolves are growing, the lynx is facing extinction. One of the greatest experts on large beasts in Slovenia is biologist Miha Krofel, who is also a member of important international research projects in Africa and Asia.
MATEV® LENARČIČ
Matev¾ Lenarčič is a truly versatile man – he is a pilot, a glider, a climber, a photographer and an environmentalist. He was the first in the world to fly around our planet several times with an ultralight aeroplane and was also declared Aviator of the Year in 2013.
THE BAROQUE MUSEUM
The Baroque Museum, opened in ©marje pri Jel¹ah a few years ago, is now home to 45 wooden sculptures, which are almost 300 years old and had previously decorated the local Kalvarija, the Way of the Cross. This Kalvarija is considered one of the most beautiful in Slovenia.
PAINTER A. BREZLAN AND HALOZE HOUSE
Haloze is a picturesque winegrowing region in the north-east of Slovenia. It is also where painter Aleksander Brezlan hails from. The artist has managed to successfully merge the old with the new in the reconstruction of an old vineyard house, while also adding a touch of art to it. He has built a new house on the foundations of the old one, preserving the heart of it in the form of a 180-year old wine press on the very same spot it once stood.
