The Dominican monastery
The Dominican monastery in Ptuj has opened a new chapter in its 800-year old history. Stage one of its renovation is now complete, turning the monastery into a lively congress and cultural centre. The undertaking was extremely challenging, yet the excellent renovation works have succeeded in paying respect to the heritage. For their works, the Enota architectural studio has also won, not only the Plečnik Award for the greatest architectural achievement in Slovenia, but also the international Architizer A + Awards, having been voted both the Jury Winner and the Popular Choice Winner.
The istrian village of Korte
In the hinterland of Slovenia's coastal towns lies a fascinating picturesque countryside that spreads over the Istrian peninsula, which some like to compare to the Italian Tuscany. Just behind Izola, we can find Korte, an ancient village with a typical Mediterranean image, encircled by vineyards, olive groves and other Mediterranean plants.
The English in the Prekmurje region
The idyllic, dreamy Prekmurje region may be considered a lesser-developed region in Slovenia, yet it seems to be one of the most interesting areas for European real estate buyers. It is particularly attractive to the English, who have bought and renovated almost 300 houses there since May 2004, when Slovenia became a member of the EU. Due to the economic crisis, some have been forced to sell, yet others persevere.
Designer Tina Rugelj
Architect Tina Rugelj has recently ventured into designing garden furniture, creating intriguing and elegant objects out of fibre-cement. This is a new material which resembles concrete, yet it is pleasant to the touch, completely healthy and environmentally friendly.
Zijalo near Mirna Peč
The Temenica river is the largest subterranean river in the Dolenjska region, whose course disappears underground on two locations. It reappears in all its beauty for the second time as the Zijalo spring near Trebnje. Due to its hydrological and geo-morphological features, Zijalo is protected as a natural monument.
