THE ŠKOCJAN ZATOK NATURE RESERVE
The Škocjanski zatok nature reserve is the largest brackish wetland in Slovenia, a real treasure trove of biodiversity. Situated just next to the Koper harbour, it is a lagoon with the remains of the sea that once surrounded the city.
ILLUSTRATOR ALENKA SOTTLER
Alenka Sottler is one of the most prominent names in the field of book illustration in Slovenia, who is also highly esteemed abroad. This year, she was the first Slovenian recipient of the gold medal, which is awarded by the US Society of Illustrators in New York and considered an Oscar for illustration.
TOLMIN
Due to its efforts in the field of sustainable development, Tolmin has been voted the Alpine town of 2016. Located in the Posočje region, Tolmin is very much aware of its natural and cultural phenomena. This is also evident from the successful projects implemented there over the past few years, including the repopulation of the indigenous Soča marble trout, the development of organic agriculture and its popular tourist attractions.
INDIGENOUS DOMESTIC ANIMALS
The number of animal species around the world is constantly decreasing, and the same holds true of domestic animals. Only a hundred years ago there were over one thousand more breeds of domestic animals than there are today. Each month six breeds become extinct, while one-third of all domestic animals are classified as endangered. The most endangered are the indigenous breeds, which have been raised in specific areas and have adapted to specific conditions typical of those areas.
EQUESTRIAN THERAPY
Horses have unique abilities, which can be of great help in therapeutic riding promoted in particular for those with special needs. One of Slovenia’s equestrian therapy centres is located in Starošince in the northeast of the country. The Back on the Horse Foundation was established by the Goljevšček family, who have to train the therapy horses themselves, since such horses cannot be bought anywhere in Slovenia.
