The Adriatic-Ionian Region connects eight countries and 70 million people. The sea is a natural resource bringing numerous challenges and opportunities. The countries from this macro-region share a common history and geographical position, but their economic development, rates of unemployment and attitudes toward the environment vary significantly. The Adriatic-Ionian Region unites both members of the EU and other states, hence this region plays a very important role in the East Balkans' approximation to the EU and connecting Europe with other parts of the world.

The Baltic Sea, the Alps, the Danube, the Adriatic and the Ionian Seas connect 19 EU members and 8 non-EU member states. Four macro-regions have 283 million inhabitants all told. Based on common climates, economic and social characteristics and challenges, the European Council created the Baltic, Danube, Adriatic-Ionian and Alpine Regions. Slovenia is the only European country at the meeting point of three European macro-regions, namely the Alpine, Adriatic-Ionian and Danube. Its position brings a lot of challenges and opportunities for joint projects and ideas. This is also the main goal of the European macro-regional strategies, aimed to encourage both EU member states and non-EU member states to connect people, ideas and projects and thus contribute to their common development.

The Bojana river, which flows into the sea near the Montenegrin town of Ulcinj is a natural heritage that needs to be protected. Local fishermen still use traditional fishing techniques. River cottages or 'kalimeras' are an important cultural heritage, which the Institute of Marine Biology of Kotor strives to protect, also by participating in international projects from Italy, Montenegro and Albania.

Green Sailing, a NGO from Split, Croatia, has started to raise awareness of responsible tourism within nautical tourism. There is more and more plastic dumped in the sea, and the coves of the Dalmatian islands are bulging with a wide variety of rubbish. The Montenegrin Institute of Marine Biology in Kotor, also participates in international projects, including the 'Welcome' project which aims to clean Montenegrin beaches.

Coffee beans reach Europe exclusively by the sea. The voyage to the port of Trieste takes at least 25 days. Trieste is the main import port for coffee beans in Europe. No less than 100 million tonnes of green coffee beans are unloaded there, so it isn't surprising that Trieste developed a special culture for drinking coffee.
