The attacker was killed by police in the Opéra district.

The so-called Islamic State (IS) later said one of its soldiers carried out the attack.

The attacker began stabbing passers-by at about 21:00 local time on the rue Monsigny.

He also tried to enter several bars and restaurants, but was blocked by people hiding inside.

Police arrived at the scene within minutes.

Three churches in Indonesia have been targeted by islamistic suicide bombers today in the morning.

The attacks took place at the second largest city Surabaya at around 7.30 local time. The attacks seemed to be coordinated.

At least 11 people have died, more than 40 are wounded.

No group has officially claimed responsibility yet officials suspect that a group which is inspired by the Islamic state could be behind the attack.

Indonesia, a county of 260 million people, has a mostly Islamic population. Still many Christians, Hinduists and Budhists are living there aas well.

In recent months the country faces more Islamic extremism.

This attack is the deadliest since 2005, when three suicide bombers killed 20 people on the island of Bali.
