Delegations from 40 countries are expected today in Warsaw, among them some 20 presidents. Slovenian president Borut Pahor will attend the festivities as well.

The main aim of the festivities is to reaffirm a common commitment to peace in a world which is very much divided now, eight decades later.

This was also emphasised during a festivity in the early morning hours at the peninsula Westerplatte in Gdansk by Vice president of the EU-Commission – Frans Timmermans: “… incredible horrors … could be avoided if we continue to work together on the basis of mutual respect and on the basis of tolerance, on the basis of understanding.”
