Israel strongly criticized the idea of some countries to recognize an independent state of Palestine. Israel's FM Lior Haiat said such acts would only reward terrorism. The criticism also points to Slovenia, which is part of group of four EU countries which reached a joint agreement to recognize Palestine. The announcement to recognize an independent state of Palestine was made on Friday by Spain, Ireland, Slovenia and Malta, in order to contribute to the success of a peace process. Palestine has so far been recognized by more than 100 countries, but the last EU country to do so was Sweden back in 2014.
