In 1958, the Nobel Prize for Literature is awarded to Boris Pasternak, one of the greatest Russian lyrists of the 20th century, for his novel Doctor Zhivago. Due to the strong political pressure of the Soviet authorities Pasternak refused the prize.
In 1958, the Smurfs were first introduced as a series of comic characters by the Belgian comics artist Peyo.
In 2002, the Moscow theater hostage crisis was the seizure of the crowded Dubrovka Theater by armed Chechens, who took 850 hostages. They demanded the withdrawal of Russian forces from Chechnya. After a three day siege, Russian forces pumped an unknown chemical agent into the building's ventilation system and killed many people.
