Today is World Wetlands Day. It’s celebrated every year on the 2nd of February to raise awareness about wetlands. Wetlands are an ecosystem rich with water, clean air, and are a natural habitat for many animals and plants. Nika Debeljak from the Institute for Nature Conservation at the University of Ljubljana, said protecting wetlands is a responsibility we have towards future generations. The Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning says wetlands today are more under threat than forests. Wetlands cover only 3% of the Earth’s surface, but absorb more CO2 than all the forests on our planet. In Slovenia wetlands cover around 5% of the total surface.
