Slovenia considers nuclear power to be a key pillar in its transition to greener energy.
At today's press-conference Infrastructure Minister Jernej Vrtovec said renewable energy sources alone - such as solar, wind and hydro power - would not be enough to cover the shortfall once coal is phased out. He said the only way to prevent the further rise in energy prices will be to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels and open the path to nuclear energy.
An energy permit for the construction of a new unit at the nuclear power station in Krško was issued this summer. The permit for the current unit expires in 2023, but is in the process of being extended.
