The Goldman Environmental Foundation conferred the world's largest award honoring grassroots environmental activists.

The prize recognizes individuals for sustained and significant efforts to protect and enhance the natural environment, undergoing big personal risk.

Among the six recipients this year is also ecological farmer Uroš Macerl from Slovenia.

The president of the Eko krog NGO is the first Slovenian to receive it since the prize was first given out in 1990.

Macerl won the prize for his courage to defend his hometown Trbovlje, which was incinerating hazardous waste, against a multinational French-owned cement factory Lafarge.

He will receive it today in San Francisco, US.
