An accident on the A1 Maribor eastern ring today caused major damage to the Malečnik highway tunnel and caused long delays and traffic jams throughout the day. The accident happened after a collision between several trucks in the tunnel, which then caused a fire. Around 120 firefighters intervened and luckily only one person is reported injured.
However, Mitja Stojnšek from the DARS Motorway company said because of the extensive damage the tunnel will remain closed for some time to come, and that traffic during that period will be redirected on the former Maribor expressway. Delays several kilometers long were reported around Maribor because of the accident.
