The secret ballot comes nearly two months after the Pensioners' Party (DeSUS) left the coalition. Their president Karl Erjavec is a rival candidate.

Addressing the National Assembly today, Erjavec said his new government's goal would be "to make Slovenia a normal state again".

For the motion to succeed, 46 of the 90 MPs would have to vote in favor. The five parties behind the motion have 43 votes combined.

The vote is to get under way tonight.
