President Borut Pahor addressed a ceremony marking the 30th anniversary of the Pekre events in Maribor. The incident 30 years ago saw the first clash between Slovenians and the Yugoslav People's Army, and was a prelude to the 1991 war for independence. Also at today's ceremony were the current mayor of Maribor and the mayor of Maribor in 1991, Magdalena Tovornik. Recollecting the incident, in which one Slovenian citizen was killed, she said people were brave enough to stand up and resist the Yugoslav Army which wanted to stop Slovenia's path to independence. Another national ceremony marking the anniversary will be held in Maribor this evening and will be addressed by Prime Minister Janez Janša.
