Some 35,000 to 40,000 will go on strike today and are demanding higher pay.

Some 15,000 teachers are expected to gather in Ljubljana's Congress Square at noon.

The strike ends tonight but may resume if there is progress in talks with the government.

There will be no classes today in most of the public primary and secondary schools, kindergartens as well as music schools and some colleges. Staff at student dorms will also be on strike.

Despite the strike, day care will be organised for children who cannot stay home.
