Several NGOs and decision makers have called against violence against women and girls. Some suggested that victims remain in an unenviable position even after reporting the crimes. The UN says more than a third of women in the world have experienced physical and/or sexual abuse.

The day also marks the start the UN's 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence. The theme of this year’s campaign is “Leave No One Behind – End Violence against Women”. It end with the Human Rights Day, 10 December.
