Herbert von Karajan is widely considered one of the greatest conductors who ever lived. He led the Berlin Philharmonic for 35 years and his performances have sold more than 200 million albums. But few people know that the famous conductor had roots in Slovenia. His maternal grandfather was born in Mojstrana, a small village near the Julian alps. By coincidence, the composer Hugo Wolf can also trace his mother’s family back to the small town of Mojstrana. But unlike Wolf, von Karajan was born in present-day Austria – in Salzburg. Still, the two classical music giants shared a common root in Slovenia.
