If you want to have a very special marriage, try having it on the island of Bled. You get there by taking a traditional wooden boat. That’s the easy part. When you arrive, the groom must carry his bride up the 99 steps that lead to the church. Tradition says if you make it without having a heart attack, you’re guaranteed a long and happy marriage.
But the good fortune doesn’t end there. There’s also the “Bell of wishes”. You can tell the bell your wishes and then – maybe - the bell will grant them.
And if the bell rings three times, that means eternal faithfulness for the just married couple. And no, luckily, the groom doesn’t have to carry the bride back down the stairs. Although that would make a pretty good new tradition.
