The motion to recognize Palestine was put forward by the Left party, but legal officers from the National Assembly pointed out that a motion on the recognition of a state can only be submitted by the government.

This means the initiative, which has been going back and forth since 2015, will not be debated in parliament. Complicating matters is also the fact that Slovenia currently has a caretaker government whith elections coming soon.
