The volunteers planted indigenous saplings, which adapt better to local conditions. An estimated 11,000 trees will have been planted by the end of this year, according to one of the organisers. It's all part of the 'Action for Nature' campaign.
One third of the trees destroyed by the fires will eventually be restored. The remaining woods and forests will renew themselves naturally.
The reforested area will become part of a new educational path called 'Green Heart of the Karst'.
The path will run through communities affected by last summer's wildfires on the Slovenian and Italian sides of the border.
