Around 100.000 ringed in the New Year in Ljubljana. Around 55.000 of them gathered in Ljubljana’s squares for the New Year’s Eve program. The New Year’s events in Slovenia started off with the New Year's dive in Lake Velenje at 1PM, and will be followed by the 14th annual New Year's Jump into the Sea in Portorož at 2PM. Last year, more than 540 jumpers braved the cold water and started the year fully refreshed.

Millions around the globe also welcomed in 2018 last night. Around 100 000 people in London ringed in the new year as Big Ben struck midnight. Hundreds of thousands celebrated in the streets of Paris. Nearly 2,000 security forces were deployed to protect the crowd -- out of some 140,000 mobilized nationwide in France. In Berlin, special tents were set up at the Brandenburg Gate to assist female victims of sexual harassment. The decision to do so followed mass assaults on women in Cologne two years ago. In Cologne itself, 1,400 police were mobilized, street lighting was improved and more video cameras installed. In New York on the other hand, 2 million people braved temperatures of almost -13°C, the second coldest New Year's Eve in the last 100 years.
