The Orthodox Christians celebrate their Christmas Eve or “Badnji Dan” today. Worshipers gather at the churches to collect the badnjak, which is an oak tree branch and bring it home, burn it and start Christmas celebrations.

This tradition is most common in Serbia, Montenegro and North Macedonia.

Similar traditions of burning logs exists also in northern parts of Europe and in North America under the expression Yule Log. Some Orthodox churches are following the Julian calendar which is 13 days behind the Gregorian calendar. Therefore, they celebrate Christmas day on the 7th of January.
