A second protest rally of farmers is taking place in the capital Ljubljana. Many tractors blocked traffic near the parliament and government buildings, where several thousand farmers protested against rules and restrictions which they say are making it near impossible to continue farming. Last week farmer representatives walked away from talks with the government after two weeks of unsuccessful negotiations. More talks are expected to happen after the May Day holidays. Among other things farmers demand the revision of the Natura 2000 protected areas, a reduction in the population of wild carnivores, no new taxes, for livestock farming to be considered the basis for sustainable farming, and the better protection of prime agricultural land.
